Snow in Istanbul...

Snow is falling here in Istanbul again. This is the first time this year, but the second time this winter. The first time it snowed, it was very little, but this time it snowed really good. The forest behind our home is completely white now, offering us a great scene to look at, to relax, to lose yourself in in your peaceful dreams, hopes, goals - if you have any.

Yesterday, I went out to go to the gym, but it wasn't a very good idea. Every thing was messed up. There was no electric in many parts of the city. The subway system and the trams were not working. The busses and the minibusses were the only alternatives. The traffic was crazy. But despite all, I managed to make it to the gym; however, only to learn that they didn't have any electiricty either, so there was no way to do anything there. There was no point in waiting; the whole city was gone mad, so the best thing to do was to get back at home as soon as possible. Perhaps, I should have never left it at the beginning. On the way back home, the subway started working, but due to electrical and technical problems, it was working very slowly. What would normally take something like 25 minutes took about 1 hour this time. Finally I arrived at home around 9pm in the evening after 4 hours of wandering in the city.

Today, it's a sunny day. And I started thinking whether I should go to the gym today. I don't know if it's worth it, but I find peace in doing sports. I forget many of my daily problems and worries while doing sports. So, I guess I will try to go anyway.

They say that it will start snowing on Monday again, and this time there will be even more snow. I actually like snow very much, just as I like winter and autumn very much. But when you live in a city of 15 million people, in which the infrastructure, transportation system, and many other necessities are not really well-organized and well-established, snow, rain, winter, or autumn - and sometimes even sun and summer - turns into a trouble rather than an object of joy, peace or pleasure.

But even then, and despite all difficulties it brings us, I accept snow as it comes. It brings something new and different to our monochrome lives here which are surrounded by monochrome walls and monochrome flats.

And most important of all, I like winter and snow because when I embrace it, there I find a peaceful warmth in it.
